The unspoiled Cowal Peninsula retains a unique Scottish identity that is reflected in its towns and villages, its arts and crafts and its various events throughout the year. If you love lochs, glens, sea, mountains and forests, you will find them in abundance in this beautiful part of the world. In fact, Dunoon has a history of knowing how to cater for visitors ever since it became a prime holiday destination in the 1800's in the heyday of the paddle steamer. The last seagoing paddle steamer in the world, The Waverley, still calls in regularly at Dunoon, Blairmore and Tighnabruaich piers throughout the summer months.
Dunoon is bordered to the north by the villages of Kirn, Hunter's Quay and Sandbank, and by the Holy Loch. Sandbank had 2 boat yards established in the late 1800's, one of which (Robertson's) built 2 challengers for the Americas Cup. Cowal's more recent history maintains the connection with conflict. The Holy Loch, running north from Dunoon, was a Royal Navy Submarine base in World War II and became the British base of the American Navy's nuclear submarine fleet from 1961 to 1992. In March 1986, Site One celebrated its 25th anniversary with ceremonies including the dedication of a Cairn, attended by Scottish and American friends. However with the reduction in European tension after the end of the Cold War, it was announced on 6 February 1991 that the Holy Loch base would close. At a farewell party speakers included Admiral Jeremy Boorda, Commander in Chief of Naval Forces in Europe; and Vice Admiral Roger F Bacon, Assistant Chief of Naval Operations, Undersea Warfare.
