What is your passion?

I love the natural world, travelling to new places, exploring. I do art classes and occasionally help to run the gallery where I paint. I enjoy all kinds of music and go to many gigs.

Tell us about you and where you live?

I was born on Hitler’s birthday in a mental hospital…my mother said you could tell! Hehe! Born on 20th April, in Lennox Castle hospital, which was the overspill hospital for the Southern General when their maternity unit was full. After leaving school I studied Computer Data Processing at Clydebank Technical College and enjoyed a 3 months stint as computer operator at the Western Infirmary, Glasgow, before taking up roles in computing with a dental firm then as assistant retail manager at a computing firm. I joined Strathclyde Police in December 1983 to do something different. It sure was, and it opened my eyes! I did all kinds of roles before retiring after 30 years of policing in January 2014 as an Inspector. Soon after I started a gardening and maintenance business with my friend and ran that for a number of years. The passing of my dad then my mum inspired me to give something back to the community, so I took up a role as driver for Age Concern Eastwood. I still do that but am also now a voluntary director and trustee with the charity. Occasionally I do invigilator duties at a local high school. Having not done art at school, but inspired by my dad’s wonderful paintings, I took up art classes a couple of years ago. I sold the very first painting I did (Blackhouses on Lewis) off the easel before I had even finished it and have since sold another couple of paintings and several prints. Oh, and as a skier, I’m on the committee of Clarkston Snowsports Club and help organize trips to Glencoe and Glenshee when conditions allow. I’m married to Tricia and we have 2 children. We live in Clarkston, just south of Glasgow. Anna (23) is in her second year studying medicine at Glasgow University having first completed a biomedical science degree at Dundee University. Jamie (21) is studying Animation and 3D Visualization at Caledonian University, Glasgow and will graduate this July with BSc (Hons).

Do you have a favourite tour?

For me, you can’t beat the highlands in summer. Stunning scenery, wide open vistas, clean air, good food and hospitality. Freedom!

What’s your favourite drink amongst friends?

Tea or coffee (honestly!)

When you’re not on tour, what do you enjoy doing?

I love spending time with my family, listening to my son playing guitar (he’s awesome!), seeing my daughter’s amazing artworks (she’s much better than me), travelling to new places on holiday, doing art or a bit of gardening, and eating out. I play badminton twice a week with friends and enjoy walking, reading, and science fiction.

What do you love about Scotland?

The stunning scenery, new buds in spring, snow on the mountains in winter, and above all friendly people.
