15 Day Spectacular Islands and Magical Highlands

Day 1

Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park


This morning you are collected from your Edinburgh accommodation and head out for Linlithgow Palace. This once grand Royalty Residence served as a favourite residence for 
Stewart royalty, including James I, during the 15th and 16th centuries, and was the birthplace of Mary, Queen of Scots. Next, we tour Doune Castle, which featured in Outlander, Game of Thrones, and Monty Python. After lunch, we tour west to the mountains, glens, lochs, and rivers of the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.

Day 2

Ayrshire


Today we tour south towards Ayr. Spend quality time at Dean Castle to discover genealogy and this 14th-century castle's rich and bloody history! Additional local attractions are to be discussed, but there are plenty of options. The multi-million-pound
restoration of Dean Castle has been completed and is now open again. East Ayrshire Council received the keys to Kilmarnock's famous structure, which underwent a £5.2 million makeover.

Day 3

Loch Lomand Fly Fishing


After breakfast, we will head out for your guided fishing boat trip on Loch Lomond. The normal method of fishing is trolling with the target species being pike and perch. However, bait or flyfishing may be the preferred if the conditions allow. The Pike here can grow to over a metre and eat anything from fish to ducks. All fishing equipment is provided and a waterproof floatation suit for each guest.

Day 4

Gateway to the Isles


After breakfast, embark on your Loch Lomond boat tour to view the islands and spot some wildlife. Back ashore, explore the charming village of Luss before touring up the length of the loch, visiting The Drovers Inn, and west out past Loch Awe to the bustling seaside town of Oban, ‘Gateway to the Isles’ to spend the evening. Walk the town and take a hike to McCaig’s Tower to get the best views over Oban and across to the Isle of Mull.

Day 5

Isle of Mull


This morning we take the morning ferry to the rugged Isle of Mull.  Crossing the Firth of Lorne, we arrive on the island and explore the north of the island with its stunning mountain scenery, seascapes, and abundant wildlife—look out for Deer, Otter and White-Tailed Eagles. We visit the town of Tobermory with its wonderful frontage of painted houses and interesting shops before we venture west to walk the white sand beach at Calgary Bay 

Day 6

Iona


Waking to the beauty of the Isle of Mull, we head out to explore the south of the island with its stunning mountain scenery and seascapes coupled with fascinating clan history. After touring through the Ardmeanach Peninsula, a short ferry crossing to the small island of Iona renowned for its tranquillity.  A short and easy walk takes us to Iona Abbey, which has been a vibrant centre of Christian worship since Columba arrived here in AD 563. 

Day 7

Over the Sea to Skye


After breakfast, we leave the Isle of Mull by taking the ferry to explore the peaceful Ardnamurchan Peninsula. This is an area ideal for wildlife watching opportunities, and we hope to see sea eagles, red deer, otters, and seals, amongst others. Later, we view Glenfinnan Monument before taking the ferry “Over the Sea to Skye.”. Spend the late afternoon walking at the Faerie Pools before heading for this evening’s accommodation.

 

Day 8

Isle of Skye


After breakfast, we head out for a tour of the Isle of Skye, passing through Broadford and on to the main settlement on the Island, Portree, with its colourful harborfront and interesting shops. After lunch, tour through the rugged Trotternish Peninsula and take in the views at Uig, the Old Man of Storr, and Kilt Rock Falls before travelling back down the island for the evening. Other options are possible.

Day 9

Isle of Harris


This morning we travel by ferry from Skye to the Outer Hebrides. The crossing takes less than 2 hours, and landing in Tarbert, we explore the dramatic beauty of the Isle of Harris with highlights including the winding Golden Road, St. Clements Church, the stunning west coast beaches, take a walk on Luskentyre beach, a weaving demonstration and Harris Tweed Exhibition

Day 10

Isle of Lewis


After breakfast, we head out to explore the rich history of Lewis, which has been inhabited by man for around 5000 years or more.  We tour north over the Hills of Harris to the ancient Calanais Standing Stones. Next, we visit Dun Carloway Broch, which will give an insight into living on the island some 2,500 years ago. We spend the afternoon visiting a traditional blackhouse village where we will discover the ancient way of life and walk on one of Lewis’ finest beaches. 

Day 11

Wester Ross


This morning allows time to explore the town of Stornoway at your leisure, taking in the local shops and Lews Castle and Grounds. Later, we re-group and board the ferry back to the mainland, cruising past the Summer Isles, and docking at Ullapool. We venture south through this very old landscape and head for the dizzying depths of Corrieshalloch Gorge and the Falls of Measach. The suspension bridge provides thrilling views into the deep gorge.

Day 12

Rothiemurchus Hairy Coo Safari


After breakfast, we head out to nearby Chanonry Point to try our luck at spotting the resident dolphins feeding near the shoreline. Dolphin activity here is influenced by tidal conditions, but we will do our best with the time available. Enjoy some free time in Inverness to explore this delightful city dubbed the ‘Capital of the Highlands’. After lunch, we tour south into the Cairngorms National Park to visit the Rothiemurchus Hairy Heilan Coos with a knowledgeable Countryside Ranger.

Day 13

Royal Deeside


This morning, enjoy a tour along the Moray coastline where we visit Findhorn Bay with magnificent beach and delightful harbour. Along the coast is Hopeman harbour and Lossiemouth beach. After lunch, we venture into Royal Deeside to spend the afternoon exploring the traditional market town of Ballater. Many of the shops here are used by the Royals when they are visiting Balmoral Castle each year, which explains the many ‘By Royal Appointment’ signs on local shops

Day 14

Cairngorms National Park


This morning we visit the delightful village of Braemar surrounded by the fine Grampian Mountains and woodland scenery. When ready, we tour south through Glenshee which offers some of the highest peaks, fertile farmland and rolling hills of the Cairngorms National Park. The rugged landscape of this area is breath-taking. This afternoon, enjoy highland Perthshire when we visit Pitlochry town and the surrounding area

Day 15

Spirit of Scotland


We make our way to Falkland village, where the square here stood in for Inverness in Outlander. Enjoy a tour of Falkland Palace, that was once the preferred place of retreat and leisure for the Stuart Kings and Queens of Scotland, including Mary Queen of Scots. Further south in Edinburgh, step beneath The Royal Mile to travel back in time with a visit to The Real Mary King’s Close. In the Early Spirit of Scotland Show, we'll enjoy an unforgettable evening of traditional Scottish dance, storytelling, music, and bagpipes, located in the centre of Edinburgh. Enjoy a Scottish dinner and sit back and let the cast of musicians, traditional Scottish dancers, singers and piper entertain you with traditional Scottish music, poetry and Highland dancing
